A Coquitlam-based bus tour company has had its operations suspended after a fatal accident December 30 in Oregon, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure announced Friday.

Nine people died and several others were injured when a bus operated by Mi Joo Tour & Travel was involved in an accident near Pendleton, Oregon.

A safety audit conducted by the ministry’s Commercial Vehicle Safety Enforcement (CVSE) branch found the bus company was not meeting its legal obligations around driver hours and pre-trip inspections.

Mi Joo will be prohibited from operating its buses in Canada until it can demonstrate its drivers meet standards as required by regulations.

Prior to the accident, the company had had a satisfactory road safety rating for the past three years.

The bus company must provide a detailed response by February 28.
