An electrician installing a circuit breaker for the Evergreen Line tripped the main breaker for SkyTrain’s central operations, which led to a total system-wide shutdown of the entire train system July 21, according to TransLink’s blog.

“Our trains are reliable 95% of the time, but we know that is little consolation for customers who are delayed for hours when we do have a significant breakdown,” said TransLink chief operating officer Doug Kelseyer.

On July 17, less than a week before this interruption, there was a three-hour train shutdown between Surrey and Burnaby.

“Two major disruptions in one week is unprecedented, and the two incidents are completely unrelated.”

TransLink said it is going to offer free transit on August 4 – B.C. Day – by way of apology for the inconvenience.
