Vancouver International Airport may have just been recognized for five-straight years as North America's best, but YVR's world-class facilities weren't enough to draw more flights to the city at the start of the year.
Take-offs and landings at the airport remained flat in January compared with the same month from the year before, according to Statistics Canada data released April 7.
There were 22,924 flight movements at YVR during the first month of 2014. That's virtually identical to the 22,919 flights to and from the airport in January 2013.
Next year may be different, depending on how business goes with the launch of a new daily non-stop Vancouver-to-Tokyo service.
All Nippon Airways' started offering its first flights between Japan and Canada on March 31.
Although flight movements were flat at YVR, the rest of the country saw a 4% decrease. Among Canada's 92 major airports, take-offs and landings dropped from 359,485 in January 2013 to 345,089 in January 2014.
Statistics Canada attributes the decline to the cold weather that gripped much of the nation this past winter as well as the closure of Edmonton City Centre airport in November 2013.
