In response to a growing number of bike-share users, Mobi Bike Share and Vancity are launching a new program to promote safer cycling in the city.

Announced May 3, Bikesafe, Mobi’s new safety program, provides newer users with safety tips online through its hashtag, #BIKESAFE, and through instructional videos made by Hub Cycling, a non-profit organization promoting safe cycling.

“There are a lot of novice and new riders trying Mobi, and we want to encourage safe and happy riding,” said Mia Kohout, general manager at Vancouver Bike Share. “This program really addresses the need to educate our customers and the community at large on safe cycling practices.”

Mobi launched in late July 2016 and despite the unusually cold winter last year, it has racked up 227,000 total trips to date, more than double the 100,000 trips reached by the end of October.

“Sustainable transportation is a key part of building healthier communities,” said William Azaroff, Vancity’s executive leader of member experience and community engagement. “Bikesafe will provide fundamental tips and resources to promote safe city riding, while encouraging new cyclists to get on the road.”

Mobi users have ridden more than 960,000 kilometres to date and there are 5,200 members in the program.
