WaterBridge Steel Inc. in Nakusp has been awarded a $26.5 million contract to build a new inland ferry for the Shelter Bay-Galena Bay crossing on Upper Arrow Lake.

The 250-passenger ferry will be built in the village of Nakusp and generate approximately 65 jobs for up to two years.

Nakusp is located on Upper Arrow Lake, south of Revelstoke.

Shelter Bay is on the west shore of Upper Arrow Lake; Galena Bay in on the east shore, north of Nakusp.

"It is great news that the new ferry will be constructed in Nakusp," said the village's mayor Karen Hamling.

"A project of this size will have a positive effect on our local economy. This will provide our businesses and residents the opportunity to showcase our spectacular scenery and unlimited recreational activities."

The new open-decked ferry will be able to carry up to 80 cars and 250 passengers. The 30-minute ferry crossing is currently served by the D.E.V. Galena, which can carry 50 vehicles and 150 passengers, and the M.V. Shellter Bay, which carries 28 vehicles and 150 passengers.
