In its 27th year of operation, Nanaimo’s seaplane terminal hit 2.2 million passenger throughputs as of July 31.

In a press release, Nanaimo Port Authority president and CEO Bernie Dumas said the seaplane service has grown steadily in its nearly three decades of operation.

“In 1986, the first full year of operation, 26,000 passengers used the terminal as compared with 140,000 passengers that moved through the terminal in 2011,” he said. “When you add seaplane numbers to local land-based air service, the ferry terminals and include cruise passengers and boater traffic, you quickly realize that Nanaimo is one of British Columbia’s significant traffic centres for business and tourism.”

Service to the terminal is provided by Harbour Air and Tofino Air seven days per week and the terminal also receives transient seaplanes for non-scheduled service and overnight stays at the terminal.
