Fraser Valley residents heading to the U.S. to shop will still have to wait in line at the border, but at least they’ll know in advance how long the wait may be, thanks to a new electronic display sign on Highway 1.

The Advanced Traveller Information System (ATIS) measures and displays border wait times to give motorists headed to the U.S. some idea of how long their wait may be. The ATIS websites (www.th.gov.bc.ca/ATIS)also allows Lower Mainlanders to check the border crossings online  before they leave home.

The newest sign is located on Highway 1 westbound between the Whatcom Road Interchange and Highway 11. It lets motorists know what the wait times at four border crossings are, which gives them the option of choosing less congested crossings. The sign is part of $2.6 million investment in border signs.
"Using advanced technologies such as this new sign at crossings along the B.C. and Washington state international border will help travellers decide when and where to cross this border and will reduce delays at these crossings," said Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade.
