The province has officially awarded the Evergreen Line contract to a consortium led by SNC-Lavalin Inc., revealed its $889 million price tag and confirmed a construction start date.
The province announced in October 2012 that SNC-Lavalin had been selected as preferred bidder against shortlisted competitors EL Partners and Kiewit/Flatiron for the design, construction and financing of the new Skytrain line.
The province yesterday announced that it has officially awarded the contract to the EGRT Construction consortium, identified the contract price tag within the $1.4 billion total project cost and confirmed that major construction is slated to begin in February.
The government further stated that the final agreement, a project report and a fairness reviewer report will be made public this spring.
Under the contract, EGRT Construction will build elevated and at-grade guideways, a two-kilometre tunnel, seven stations, power substations, train operating systems and parking facilities, and a vehicle storage and light maintenance facility.
Besides SNC-Lavalin, EGRT Construction includes Graham Building Services, International Bridge Technologies Inc., Jacobs Associates Canada Corp., Rizzani de Eccher Inc., S.E.L.I. Canada Inc., SNC-Lavalin Constructors (Pacific) Inc., SNC-Lavalin Constructors (Western) Inc. and MMM Group Inc.
The Evergreen Line is set to open in summer 2016. According to government estimates, construction of the line will create 8,000 jobs.
Earlier this month, Business in Vancouver reported that the Evergreen Line board had discussed SNC Lavalin's legal troubles at a meeting in June 2012, prior to the project contract being awarded to the consortium.
