Urban Garage, a West Vancouver luxury and high-performance car dealer, recently went to great lengths to bring a rare 1973 Porsche 911RS to the West Coast from New York. But don’t bother reaching for your wallet – the collector’s item has already sold for more than US$400,000.

Urban Garage president Duncan Pearce said he had been looking for the Porsche 911RS on behalf of a local client for some time. When he finally located one in Connecticut, he flew there to check it out and had it brought to West Vancouver.

Pearce said the client, who wants to remain anonymous, is a wealthy car collector who lives part-time in Vancouver.

The 1973 Porsche 911RS was one of only 1,360 models made and is valued for a number of reasons, including its rarity.

“Over the years, many of those cars have been wrecked or rusted apart,” Pearce said. “It’s a super high performance version of the 911 and was produced so that Porsche could meet some rules in order to be able to race the cars.”

Like art or gold, collectible cars are seen as a good investment. Ten years ago, a 1973 Porsche 911RS would have sold for $150,000, Pearce said.

“The value of these cars has increased dramatically in the last decade.”
