More funding for the Royal Canadian Navy and Canadian Coast Guard ships is dropping anchor in North Vancouver.

Ottawa announced Monday (March 14) Seaspan’s Vancouver Shipyards will be on the receiving end of a $65-million contract for the Coast Guard’s offshore oceanographic science vessel and joint support ships for the navy.

The contract for the Coast Guard’s science vessel is worth up to $30 million and will allow Vancouver Shipyards, located in North Vancouver, to buy propulsion systems, engines, scientific equipment and steel.

The $35-million contract for the navy support ships allows Vancouver Shipyards to select the equipment needed to finalize the design and build the ships. The federal government said the size of the contract would grow as the design progresses.

Contractors are expected to complete the science vessel by 2019. The first navy ship is expected to be delivered by 2020.
