WestJet announced July 24 that it will launch non-stop flights between Vancouver and Huatulco, Mexico, starting October 29.

The airline also plans to increase service from Vancouver to Calgary, Edmonton, Fort McMurray, Fort St. John, Cabo San Lucas, Cancun and Puerto Vallarta.

“WestJet will increase service from Vancouver by 43 weekly flights this winter,” said Brian Znotins, WestJet’s vice-president of network planning, alliances and corporate development.

“In addition to new service to Huatulco, we will operate more flights between Vancouver and Calgary than any other carrier and increase connections available via Vancouver by 34%.”

The new flights to Huatulco, which is a beach destination on the Pacific Coast south of other Mexican resort towns such as Puerto Vallarta and Acapulco, will be on a Boeing 737-800 aircraft that will have space for 168 passengers, including 12 in a premium section. The weekly flights are set to end on April 22.

An initial seat sale is on until July 31, with the price for a one-way fare to Huatulco from Vancouver starting at $289.39.

WestJet is increasing service on the following routes:

•Vancouver-Fort McMurray, to six from five times weekly;

•Vancouver-Edmonton, to 63 from 60 times weekly (nine times each business day);

•Vancouver-Calgary, to 105 from 100 times weekly (15 times each business day);

•Vancouver-Fort St. John, to 12 from seven times weekly;

•Vancouver-Puerto Vallarta, to eight from seven times weekly; and

•Vancouver-Cancun, to seven from six times weekly.

Once these increases are implemented, WestJet will have more non-stop flights to Hawaii and Mexico than any other carrier out of Vancouver. It will have 42 weekly flights to Hawaii and 22 weekly flights to Mexico for a total of 64 weekly flights to those sun destinations combined, according to statistics provided by the Vancouver Airport Authority.
