Canadians looking to save some pence as they hop the pond will have a new option when WestJet launches new non-stop flights from Vancouver to London this spring.

The Calgary-based airline carrier announced Tuesday (September 15) service from YVR to London-Gatwick would run seasonally from May to October beginning in 2016.

A one-way fare departing Vancouver starts at $300, while a flight back from London will start at £230 (C$470). The lowest flyers might be able to get for a round-trip ticket would be just under $800.

The carrier announced in July 2014 it would begin introducing wide-body aircraft into its fleet the following year in a bid to expand its international presence.

“Who would've imagined in 1986, or even in 2006, that WestJet would ever fly to Europe? It just wasn't in the cards,” CEO Greg Saretsky told Business in Vancouver the September after the announcement.

The four 767-300 planes can carry 262 passengers and fly for about 10 hours.

The airliner is also launching the new London service this spring in Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg and St. John’s, N.L.

While WestJet has built a reputation for often offering cheaper options than competitors, the airline followed suit with other airlines last year when it began adding $25 baggage fees for flights in Canada and the U.S.
