Through work-integrated learning experiences, BCIT students build their job-readiness in today’s dynamic career market.

In a province where skilled labour is both essential and competitive, there’s one school that stands out for its commitment to applied education that puts real-world experience at the centre of student learning.

The British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) is helping to close the gap between education and employment by connecting industry with future-ready talent through work-integrated learning (WIL).

Building talent through hands-on education

“The key difference with BCIT is how deeply integrated work experience is throughout our programs,” says Kenton Low, Dean of the BCIT School of Business + Media. “Instead of sitting there and learning theory, we want to make sure our graduates are job-ready from day one.”

BCIT’s School of Business + Media provides a variety of ways for businesses to engage with students, including internships, practicums and business consulting projects. These experiences allow students to apply what they learn in class to real-world business challenges—preparing them to hit the ground running in today’s dynamic job market.

Work-integrated learning (WIL) that starts on day one

Unlike traditional co-op models that separate classroom instruction from work terms, BCIT’s WIL approach is embedded throughout the entire learning journey. Students continuously apply classroom concepts in practical settings—whether through industry-sponsored assignments, practicums or hands-on internships.

Low emphasizes the importance of ongoing industry engagement: “We believe that to be job-ready, students need regular exposure to industry and real projects—not just hypothetical exercises.” The result? BCIT graduates are equipped with the confidence, skills and experience to deliver results from the moment they enter the workforce.

Business consulting projects are a win for all

One of BCIT’s most impactful offerings for industry is its business consulting projects, where small teams of students partner with companies to solve real-world challenges—from market expansion to operational efficiency. These projects yield tangible results for businesses while allowing students to build professional skills in a supportive environment.

“It’s a total win-win,” says Low. “Businesses get fresh insights and practical solutions, and the students build their confidence and skills. They’re so excited to be solving real problems.”

Low shared the story of a student consulting team that helped a healthcare clinic revamp its intake process, reducing wait times by 40%. Another team working with a manufacturing company cut storage costs 20% and improved order fulfillment rates by redesigning their inventory controls system. These are not theoretical scenarios—they’re real results generated by BCIT students.

Supporting small and mid-sized businesses

For small or mid-sized businesses that may be unsure if they can take on a student or student team, Low offers reassurance. “You don’t have to have a large organization or a formal program to benefit. Even small projects can bring big returns.”

BCIT students are trained to adapt quickly and offer support where it's needed most—whether on a one-off consulting project, a short-term practicum or a longer internship. Businesses of any size can benefit from the fresh thinking and energy that students bring.

Ready for the workforce, ready for the future

In today’s challenging job market, employers want new hires who can contribute immediately. With 98% of BCIT grads finding work in their field within six months, the results speak for themselves.

“All roads lead to BCIT when it comes to hiring talent that can land with their feet running,” says Low.

From consulting projects to internships and practicums, BCIT offers businesses across British Columbia a direct path to future-ready talent—while helping shape the workforce of tomorrow.
