There are many skills required to be a successful and inspiring leader: motivation, positivity, responsibility and – perhaps the most important, but often overlooked – time mastery.

Mastering the art of time management is not only critical to running a successful business but also essential if someone wants to be an effective leader of today.

“Time mastery is a fundamental leadership skill in today’s world of exponential change,” explains Nancy MacKay, the CEO and founder of MacKay CEO Forums, a national, high-impact, intensive peer group for CEOs, executives and business owners across the country. She adds that most business leaders and owners don’t possess advanced time management skills, and that often gets in the way of achieving greater success both in business and in life.

The secrets of time mastery

One of the biggest mistakes business owners and leaders make is that they fall into the working 24-7 trap. “The solution to that is to develop a 90-day plan,” says MacKay, who adds that business leaders should map out both their personal and business goals every 90 days and share them with family or people they trust.

Another major mistake business leaders make is that they let their ego get in the way. MacKay says the solution is to “park your ego” and make a list of what you’re not good at and turn your focus to things that work for you – in essence, put your energy into what you excel at.

Honesty, both in the workplace and more broadly in everyday life, is another key ingredient to mastering time management. MacKay advises leaders to, “Tell the truth, even if it hurts or costs money because, in the long run, you’ll never regret being honest and open, particularly as a leader.”

MacKay will share all of her time mastery advice at the Association for Corporate Growth British Columbia (ACG BC) Middle Market Growth Conference during her keynote address, which takes place on Tuesday, April 9, at the Fairmont Waterfront Vancouver.

The ACG experience

The ACG conference offers an opportunity to learn from industry leaders as well as network with some of the province’s most successful entrepreneurs and their advisors. ACG also features discussions with a diverse lineup of panellists and, of course, the keynote speech from MacKay.

The conference is targeted at business owners and leaders, financial executives, providers of capital and deal professionals. “It really is a forum to meet all kinds of people that could help you grow your business through acquisitions, help you raise capital or help sell your business,” says MacKay.

The conference will take place in Vancouver April 8-9, with close to 350 leading business professionals in attendance. On the evening of Monday, April 8, a reception will take place between 6 and 9 p.m. The bulk of the conference takes place on Tuesday at the Fairmont Waterfront Hotel from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“The core membership of ACG is made up of these very talented people who know how to help business owners grow their businesses, raise capital, do deals, or sell their businesses, and so it’s really a place for them to stay current and relevant and do some peer learning,” says MacKay.
